Welcome to the Daily Excess

Looptworks has one simple philosophy – create all of our products and run our business using only what already exists. It is called Upcycling.

Upcycling is a term coined by William McDonaugh and Michael Braungart. The process of converting an industrial nutrient (material) into something of similar or greater value, in its second life. Yeah, I guess you could say we are kind of McGiver-esk in our approach to things.

It takes over 400 gallons of water to make 1 organic cotton t-shirt. It takes over 1800 gallons to make 1 pair of organic cotton jeans.

A typical textile factory throws away about 60,000 pounds of waste a week.

With all of that excess out there that has never been used, why create anything new?

So welcome to our blog. A gathering place to exchange ideas on how we can all be part of the upcycling movement. We want to hear from you.

Tell us what you think about what we are doing. How do you like our products? What else should we be doing? Introduce us to others that turn excess into meaningful things. Art, music, products . . . we want to know.

SHOW US YOUR EXCESS.

The good, the bad, the funny, the ugly – we promise not to judge. We are all figuring this out together.

We will be providing posts from our Looptworks World Headquarters . . . ok, it is a small office in Portland, Oregon. We will also be getting up to date info from our Secret Agents in the field about what is happening in different parts of this globe we call home.

You can always send us stuff for future posts – tell us about great music, art, surf trips or other random adventures out in the wilds of life. Just email us at backtalk@looptworks.com.

Enjoy the blog and we hope to hear from you soon.

Treehugger.com supports Looptworks and our upcycling ways

Fact from the United Kingdom:

If everyone in the UK (about 61 million) bought 1 upcycled or reclaimed clothing item, it would save over 370 million gallons of water.

That is enough fresh water for 2,032,697 people for 1 year.
