STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

STEP 1

1. Layer the RS of the shell fabric on top of both layers of 100% cotton fabric. Edges should match all around.

STEPS 2 & 3

2. Start sewing on a 9” long side, 2” up from the bottom corner.

3. Backstitch to secure, sew to down to 1/4” seam allowance from edge.

STEP 4

4. Pivot and put the end of one elastic strap into the corner. In between the shell layer and cotton layers, parallel to your stitch line, butted up against the needle.

STEP 5 & 6

5. Sew over elastic, backstitch over once for strength.

6. Before sewing the remainder of the 6” side, take the loose end of the already attached elastic strap and place it in the corner, 1/4” from the bottom edge. Check that your elastic strap is not twisted and continue to sew, again backstitching over the elastic for strength.

STEP 7

7. This is how a correctly sewn elastic strap without twists will look when you look at the inside the seam you just sewed.

STEP 8-10

8. Continue to sew around the perimeter, repeat steps 4-6 on the last 6” side.

9. Leave a 2-3” gap open for turning, backstitch to secure.

10. >--< Symbols represent areas where the elastic has been secured with backstitching.

STEP 11

11. Reach through the 2-3” gap and turn your mask right side out. You can lightly pull the elastic to turn the corners out.

STEP 12-14

12. The edge with the opening will be the bottom edge of your mask.

13. Use a ruler and a straight pin to find and mark the center of the top edge of your mask.

14. Use two straight pins to mark 1.5” inches away from the center in both directions, this gives us a 3” channel for the nose band. You can now remove the straight pin that is marking the center.

STEP 15 & 16

15. Check that your edges have been turned neatly and are centered.

16. Begin top stitching 1/8” away in from the top left corner, backstitch to secure.

STEP 17 & 18

17. > Symbol indicates backstitch.

18. Top stitch 1/8” from the top edge, stop and pivot at the straight pin.

STEP 19 & 20

19. Sew down, 1/2” away from the top edge of your mask, pivot.

20. Important: Insert the nose band now through the hole in the bottom edge. Move it up tightly against the top edge hem and the 1/2” stitch line you just made. Make sure the nose band is out of the way of the needle and follow the measurements closely. Nose band is indicated in images by gray bar.

23. Finish top stitching to 1/8” from the corner, pivot.

STEP 25 & 26

25. Lift presser foot and continue to form two more small pleats following the same method.

26. Stop 1/8” from bottom edge, pivot.

THE FINAL STEPS!

27. Topstitch 1/8” from bottom edge, be sure the open gap edges are turned inside and captured by the topstitching.

28. Make three pleats up the second side – these pleats are formed in the same method, but reversed so that the pleats on both sides go in the same direction (as pictured).

29. At top corner, backstitch to secure, remove from machine and trim loose threads.
